This gallery contains pages from a Victorian colouring book for you to print out and colour in!
The outlines were drawn by the popular illustrator, Kate Greenaway, for children to paint with watercolours. The “Little Folks” Painting Book also contained stories and verses, which were meant to inspire young artists and be of interest to readers in their own right.
It was a spin-off from Little Folks magazine, which was for readers between 8 and 15 years old, though it also contained special items for ‘Very Little Folk’.
Little Folks magazine offered ‘Prizes in Money and Medals in Silver and Bronze’ for the best coloured pictures sent in from the painting book. The pictures would then be given to children’s hospitals ‘for the amusement of little ones during their weary hours in hospital’.
You can see the The “Little Folks” Painting Book (circa 1879) on display at Exeter Central Library until 31 May.
